Midnight
The countdown starts everywhere at once, never on the same number. Arms go up, a soft white flash drifts over everyone's heads, and the music isn't about to stop for that.
Friday, 3 am
The height of the night
The year is three hours old and the dancefloor is full to the back wall. Amber and violet share the haze, the lasers strike the chandelier, and nobody thinks about tomorrow, which is already today.
Friday, 5:30 am
The far end of the night
In January, the day breaks late, which suits everyone. The dancefloor has drawn in around those waiting for the sun, and the sound grows deeper as the crowd thins.
Friday, at sunrise
Dawn
The year's first sun rises on the dancefloor side and throws the dancers into silhouette. Someone applauds it like the end of a set. Outside, it is colder than at midnight.
Friday, 11:30 am
The end
The afterparty empties in small groups, and people wish each other a happy new year for the fourth time. The chairs go out into the yard, into the January sun, which gives light but no heat.
Then silence returns
At midday on New Year's Day, the barn is empty, the floor is sticky, and someone is putting away the cables, wishing the speakers a happy new year. This is the part nobody photographs.
